Vintage WW2 JEEP Cap
- Ordering Info
"the real deal!..."
U.S. Government Issue
The genuine Jeep Cap is made of 100% pure wool, which is a favorite because it remains comfortable across a wide variety of temperatures and sailing conditions... Stays warm even if it gets wet! This is a double-knit, offering twice the warmth of a standard US Navy watchcap, plus it has a low-profile brim to help protect the eyes.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE JEEP CAP
The design dates all the way back to 1942, as issued by the U.S. Army to provide padding and warmth underneath a steel helmet. However with its looser fit and soft, slouchy weave, it was also known to be very comfortable... so much that many soldiers began wearing the Jeep Cap as an everyday watchcap without a helmet.
And so it became something of a trend, much to the dismay of General George S. Patton who described the Jeep Cap as "slovenly and un-military!" and who was in fact, famously known to have plucked the Jeep Cap right off the top of a soldier's head during routine inspection.
With very few changes since WW2, the same basic cap remained in use and was further popularized by the TV character Sgt. James Kinchloe from the 1960's series Hogan's Heroes... followed by Corporal Radar O'Reilly from M.A.S.H., in the 1970's.
Today, the Jeep Cap remains a standard military issue for its original purpose, and is still manufactured in America per Department of Defense specifications.
100% pure wool. Soft, stretchy... comfortable!... One size fits all.
