The history of this classic sweater dates all the way back to the beginning of World War I, where it was issued to the brave crewmembers serving aboard British E-Class submarines. Conditions aboard the early subs were known to be some of the most primitive and notoriously harsh... especially while patrolling up to 200-feet beneath the surface of Europe's northernmost waters... with extreme cold temperature variations as well as constant dampness from hull condensation, leaky rivets and hatch seals, etc.

Therefore according to the Royal Navy, the Submariner Sweater was not considered a luxury item at all, but rather it was a necessity, an essential piece of military survival gear. And later, having well-established itself during the First World War, the sweater remained "standard issue" to British sub crews throughout the next 35+ years, including World War II.

Along with the advent of much-improved climate control and ventilation systems found aboard later subs of the mid-1950's onward, the Submariner Sweater was eventually phased out from official Royal Navy issue... which is really just a polite way of saying that if you were a British submariner in the post WW2 era, you could still have the sweater but Her Majesty (Elizabeth II) wasn't going to pay for it... you'd have to buy the damn thing yourself (!!).

.
Fortunately the Submariner Sweater is still available today, manufactured to the exact same Ministry of Defense (UK) specifications of the original era. It combines a high-density, wind and spray resistant knit with the softest wool from prize-winning British sheep. Seams are interlocked for maximum durability. Widely favored for its ability to provide maximum comfort across a wide variety of sailing conditions... stays warm even if it gets wet!

Properly sized to fit, with good ease of movement. Generous length falls just below waist for extra comfort and warmth whether sitting or standing on deck.
