THE REAL DEAL

At the onset of World War II, the Colonial Knife Co. (Providence, R.I.) was commissioned by the U.S. Navy to manufacture a freshly configured Deck Knife which was to become the standard issue for sailors in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
Although similar to other designs of that era, the new Mark 1 was specifically created for naval utility and multiple tasks aboard the ship - especially during wartime. These functions included material handling (munitions, dunnage, etc), ropes and rigging as well as self-defense, survival, medical and rescue ops:
- Hardened AISI 1075 steel for superior edge keeping and durability
- Non-reflective, Parkerized "blackout" finish blade
- Razor sharp scalpel tip, optimized for slicing and cutting
- Molded polymer handle (scale) for improved non-slip grip
- Ability to be boiled for emergency sterilization/field surgery
- Secure scabbard (sheath) with lanyard/leg strap
"Today after 80+ years of production, the Mark 1 remains a very solid and useful knife, it is not just for show. The "blackout blade" is non-reflective, specially hardened hi-carbon steel (AISI-1075/Rockwell C60), extremely sharp right out of the package."
.
The grooved scale (handle) is molded of Tenite™ polymer, which provides a secure, non-slip grip - even with gloves or when wet. Unlike wood or stacked leather scales, Tenite is rot-proof and the entire knife can be boiled for emergency sterilization/field surgery.
The scabbard (sheath) is genuine leather with machine stitching plus rivets for durability. Wide loop fits belts up to 3-inches wide. Per military specs, each one is stamped USN and includes a braided lanyard/leg strap.

COMMENTS:
The Colonial Mark 1 is a superb knife for serious mariners and collectors alike. It is well suited to the following tasks aboard the ship:
Rigging & Splicing, Fast Cutting
Cargo, Dunnage & Materials Handling
Galley & Quarterdeck - Food & Fish Prep
Survival, Rescue & Self Defense
The scabbard can be worn on the belt, lashed to a harness or bosun's chair, or strapped to the companionway ladder, for quick access to the cockpit and/or galley.
**THIS KNIFE IS NOT STAINLESS STEEL. It should be expected the blade will develop a weathered patina over time and with use. As with other tools aboard the ship, it can be occasionally wiped down with a light coat of oil to prevent corrosion during long term storage. IF YOU PREFER STAINLESS PLEASE CHECK OUR OTHER KNIFE LISTINGS.
Nicely packed for gift giving or presentation. Includes mimeograph copy of an original 1944 US Navy requisition letter (as pictured), plus care sheet and warranty card. Ships quickly and directly from our Florida stockroom.
